What do you get when you combine summertime and Argentine tango? You get a smouldering scene of steamy dance outdoors cooled by the late night air. Imagine the smouldering scene: much like adding cold milk to a steaming cup of coffee, large groups of dancers saunter across the open air floor as the sunset gives way to the illuminating moonlight that glows across their faces.

Believe it or not, this is not just in Buenos Aires. In fact, right here in Los Angeles the heart of Argentina beats strong at the Music Center. Throughout the summer the Music Center in the heart of LA hosts a variety of dance and musical events that are free and open to the public of all ages. On Friday, June 22, 2016, Dance DTLA brings Argentine Tango to downtown Los Angeles.

From 7:00 PM – 11:00 PM the open air plaza will be filled with the sounds of classic Argentine tango music and cabeceo’s (subtle head nods inviting a partner out to the dance floor). The evening will start off with a brief beginners class to cover the basics for all the newcomers, and also as a refresher for more experienced dancers who could always benefit from helpful reminders of concepts long forgotten. Some of LA’s top instructors and dancers will be there dancing along to music provided by popular local DJ’s.

Parking is available in the Music Center parking lot located just under the Music Center Plaza off of Grand Ave. Patrons are asked not to bring lawn chairs or blankets, as chairs and tables will be provided for public use. Food and drinks will be available for purchase and water fountains can be found throughout the plaza.
Whether you’re a tango aficionado or a complete novice, this is wonderful opportunity to get out and enjoy not only the dancing and music, but also the ambiance of different types of people coming together, for the love of art, culture and community.
