Lindy Hopping into Tango

Shesha emailed me one Saturday afternoon a couple of weeks back and reminded me that ATOMIC’s first Midnight Milonga was taking place that night and wouldn’t it be fun if I could make it?
My first thought? Oh crap.
Not for the reasons you’re thinking – one of my goals this year was to learn how to tango, so I was excited to go. But I’m a swing dancer so I was also intimidated to venture into the Latin scene having absolutely no ballroom experience. Yes, I realize it’s at ATOMIC, one of the friendliest venues I’ve ever danced at, but what can I say? I was feeling a little bit chicken. I’ve watched tango dancers for years and envied their elegance and grace on the dance floor. My though of “oh crap” was followed by “I am not that graceful.”

How to ask someone to dance.

Social dancing does not operate the same way as a club does, so use common sense and you’ll get your dances off to a wonderful start.
1. Be a Gentleman…or a Lady
Polite and Respectful
The most important thing to remember when asking someone to dance is to be polite and courteous. And this goes both ways, no matter who is doing the asking. There are some social dance scenes that are more relaxed than others – for example, the swing dance scene tends to be pretty casual so it doesn’t matter if it is the lead or follow who is doing the asking. The ballroom and latin scenes, however, tend to be a bit more traditional in that the gentlemen do most of the asking but in this day and age, if you want to dance, just ask.

A wardrobe of dance basics can get you very far and, with some clever wardrobe planning, you can have a really versatile wardrobe with infinite possibilities. I get asked frequently about where to get started, so I’m going to give my basic advice about pieces to lay the foundation for a fabulous swing dancing wardrobe and where to find them. These are all pieces I have in my closet. I am a big proponent of personal style, so my examples may lean more towards my taste for vintage, but the principles should be generally applicable.
